You can sell micro jobs at Fourerr, work as a freelancer or maybe do both (check this article to see the difference between the two). The bottom line is that you are working and earning from home, or at least you don’t go to work five days per week from 9 to 5. When I started working online, I felt wonderful and free. As with all other things, there are bumps on the road with this kind of working as well. However, if you manage to overcome the obstacles which arise at the very beginning, working online can be an experience which will significantly contribute to your personal development. Here is how.

When you work in an office, there are your colleagues. Some of them may annoy you, but others are excellent co-workers and you can learn a lot from them. When you work from home, there are no colleagues for trivia talks, nor for sharing knowledge and experience in your field. Although I share my apartment with two friends who also work from home, as an extrovert, I found freelancing very anti-social and felt like a loner. Since my overall communication with clients was via the internet, I didn’t even talk with someone face-to-face. No laughing, no arguing, and no after work hangings.

Discipline and time management. One of the main features of my character is that once I end my relationship with something, whether it is a job, friendship or romantic relationship, I never go back. I don’t even buy the same perfume twice. Although I felt like a loner, I knew this was a new challenge I have to face and solve. What I did was mastering my discipline and time management skills. I decided what time I wake up every day and how many hours I work per day. I start working no later than 11 am and finish no later than 4.30 pm. Afterwards, I socialize with my family, friends, ex coworkers, boyfriend etc. Every day. No exception.

Everyday improvement. Knowing that you will work no later than 11 am and finish no later than 4.30 pm, you dedicate yourself completely to the task at hand to get the job done. Keeping in mind that your biggest rival is yourself, I am pushing myself to get the job done better than yesterday. In this way, your productivity and self-esteem are skyrocketing, and this is self-enforcing spiral. Once you achieve your goal for today, you will feel inspired to achieve the goal set for tomorrow. Additionally, as I don’t have an opportunity to share knowledge with my office colleagues, I started dedicating about an hour every day to see what’s new in my field and improve myself. Not to mention the conferences I attend, the online courses I enroll in, and the trainings I participate in. My additional source of inspiration is the thought that I will hang with the people I love afterwards.

Social capital, open-mindedness and communication. Working alone at home, I discovered how much the people in my life really mean to me. As I learned how to completely dedicate myself to the tasks, I learned how to dedicate to them as well and truly appreciate their presence in my life. However, at one point I asked myself: “What about the people I communicate with via internet?” That’s another aspect that you may not be aware of. While working online means that people are not sitting next to you, it still means that you communicate with them. The online market is really a multicultural place and you deal with much greater number of people from different cultures and different personalities, than you would do in real life. This is what makes your communication skills skyrocketing. And as you are placed in a multicultural environment, you learn different cultures and start being open-minded.

Freedom and Flexibility. Online work grants you with the freedom and flexibility to organize your life as you want to. Although you can often hear people complain of the lack of freedom to organize their lives as they want to and have more time to do the things they love, not everyone is prepared to take the challenge. Greater freedom comes with greater responsibility about the money that you earn and spend, the quality of product you deliver to the clients, professional and personal development etc. However, with perseverance, you can really learn how to make money online and have free time to do what makes you happy and discover yourself.

The skills needed to be an excellent online worker are easily converted to your personal life. Therefore, all character improvements that you must achieve in order to be a good online seller, will greatly contribute to your personal development, hence the quality of life you live. The times when people considered success only through materialistic lenses has passed. Nowadays success includes more things, besides earning for life. Success today probably more equates to happiness than money. Working online, you have a freedom to manage your time and again, to do what makes you happy and discover yourself.
