History of Valentine’s Day
There are many stories about the origins of Valentine’s Day, bother versions involving a saint named Valentine:
Valentine Performs Marriages
In Rome during the 3rd century, the Emperor Claudius II declared that the soldiers that were unmarried fought better than those that were. He therefore prohibited men from marrying. However, the priest Valentine still performed weddings and was sadly found out then killed.
Valentine Falls in Love
The second tale we hear about St Valentine is from around the same time and is when Christians were being persecuted for their religion. In an attempt to hide them, Valentine was discovered and imprisoned and sentenced to death. Whilst in jail, he fell in love with the jailors daughter and before his execution he sent a letter to her signed ‘From your Valentine’.
